Is stress bad for your health? Let’s look at the 3 types of stress in everyday life and how we can help combat it.
Stress is something we all have to deal with, no matter what stage of life we are in. There are 3 types of stress: physical, chemical, and emotional. Here are some examples:
- Physical – lack of proper nourishment, lack of sleep, or physical wounds
- Chemical – exposure to toxic substances in the environment
- Emotional – heartache, upsetting situations
There’s nothing wrong with stress in and of itself – in fact, it can help us learn and grow into stronger people.
When things are working well in the body, we experience stress and then our body takes time to renew and repair itself, making us stronger than we were before the stress.
Problems only start happening when our stress level is GREATER than our ability to relax and repair. When we find this happening, disease starts to set in. We start to feel overwhelmed, or physical symptoms start popping up. This is a message from our body to SLOW DOWN and cut out stress.
You may be thinking, “How am I supposed to reduce my stress? I have to live my life!” I agree. But you may be surprised at the amount of small, sustainable changes anyone can make in their life that can shift a heavy load into a manageable one! Small changes over time equal big results.

You see, I’ve experienced a season life where I was juggling chronic illness, moving, plus caring for a newborn and toddler. This experience forced me to cut out every source of unnecessary stress possible. I evaluated every part of my life and stripped away whatever I could. After much research and experimentation, I came up with a system for balancing life and stress that has helped me immensely, and I’m excited to share it with you.
This system spans four areas of life: soul, health, schedule, and home. If both the external and internal sources of stress are addressed, peace will be the result. While it’s not usually possible to eliminate stress altogether, lots of things can be done to simplify and reduce it drastically.
Here’s one exercise that can help you start to get a handle on your stress levels:
When I went to the doctor struggling with fatigue, she told me to do this exercise. Get a piece of paper and divide it into two columns. Label the first column “what fills me” and the second column “what drains me.” In the first column, list all the things in your life that you enjoy and that bring you happiness. In the second column, list all the things that are making you feel stressed or burned out. Then, see if there are any items in column 2 that you can eliminate. Also, make a concentrated effort to do MORE of the activities in column 1. It’s easy for our lives to get out of balance in this area, and this exercise will bring you some much-needed perspective.
