Family Favorite Banana Snack with Peanut Butter
While I am tempted to think this cute little snack is too “easy” to warrant a full blog post, you guys said you wanted more healthy snacks! And this has been our go-to lately. They’re so fun to make.
Plus, they’re filled with healthy ingredients but taste like a special treat. My kids even ask for this for dessert. And it’s so easy, kids can make it themselves!
We started calling them “banana boats,” but they aren’t exactly boat-shaped so maybe you can think of a better name for them? Please let me know in the comments if you think of something cute.
These banana snacks are the perfect thing to make when you’re wondering what to do with excess bananas or overripe bananas. Especially if you don’t have the time or energy to bake banana muffins or bread.
Sometimes you just need a minimal effort, no bake banana snack.
Is a banana good for a snack?
Absolutely! Bananas are filled with potassium, B6, vitamin C, magnesium, and more. They’re also a great source of energy and aid digestion (1).
So any banana-based snack is going to be healthy, especially for growing kids who need extra energy!
You could even call this a “breakfast banana” and eat it in the morning, topped with lots of healthy add-ons.
This would also make the perfect bedtime snack, since bananas also contain tryptophan which help your body produce melatonin and serotonin to sleep better (2).
Is peanut butter and banana a healthy snack?
Bananas are an even better snack when topped with sugar free, natural peanut butter. This adds healthy fat and protein to balance blood sugar, along with folate, copper, and iron.
I really love Sprout’s peanut butter – the only ingredient is roasted peanuts! There are no unhealthy oils or sugars added. Here’s a really similar kind that only contains peanuts and salt.
How to Make This Easy Peanut Butter Banana Snack
Just peel a banana, cut it in half, then cut in half again lengthwise – like so. Spread each banana piece with a teaspoon of natural peanut butter.
Then comes the fun part – healthy sprinkles! Sprinkle on your favorite healthy toppings.
We love shredded coconut, dark chocolate chips, and blueberries. Richard even likes to toast his banana snack with coconut in the toaster oven. The possibilities are endless!
Here are some “sprinkle” ideas to get you started:
- Granola
- Shredded coconut
- Raisins
- Dark chocolate chips
- Blueberries
- Other dried fruits
- Sunflower seeds
- Chia seeds
- Homemade healthy marshmallows
Can I use something besides peanut butter for the spread?
Absolutely! Feel free to sub sunflower seed butter, coconut butter, almond butter, or anything else you like.
You could even use jam instead with nuts sprinkled on top, but I like balancing the sweetness of the banana with some blood-sugar balancing fat and protein in the nut butter.
