This Christmas song is one of my favorites, as is the lovely drink it promotes.
Researching the meaning of “a-Wassailing” reveals a very interesting history. When I searched for an image of wassail, a picture of a bird came up (a wassail is a bird, I guess?). Makes sense, because caroling and birds go hand in hand.
Then I read that wassailing means to sing and carol. I also read that it specifically refers to drinking this traditional beverage… which is often alcoholic (I don’t drink so I prefer the non-alcoholic version).
Whatever wassailing means, it has a very nice ring to it. My mom (or MaMaw, as she is called by the grandkids) makes this homemade wassail recipe traditionally every year. This recipe is warm, comforting, and tastes like Christmas in a cup!
I can just picture Charles Dickens enjoying a cup by the fire, pen in hand, can’t you?
Another plus: this traditional wassail makes your whole house smell like Christmas – no candles or potpourri needed.

Traditional Holiday Wassail
This traditional holiday wassail recipe with seasonal fruits and mulled spices is the perfect addition to any celebration.
- 1 quart apple juice
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup lemon juice fresh squeezed
- 6 whole cloves
- 2 sticks cinnamon
- 1 pinch ground ginger
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg
- 4 pieces sliced citrus fruits
Add all ingredients to a pot or slow cooker and heat gently. Simmer for 1-4 hours to allow flavors to meld.
Leftovers may be stored in the refrigerator and reheated.
