The Gift of Christian Motherhood
Being a boy mama is some kind of special. Every morning we rush around and get my oldest ready for Kindergarten so my husband can drop him off at school.
And every day, my son and I wave at each other (usually until the truck is out of sight). Richard informed me that not only does Gabriel wave until I’m out of sight, he keeps on waving until they reach the first traffic light.
He told his dad it’s because “That’s how much I love mama.”
Privileged is an understatement when I think of how it feels to be given this kind of love. Looking into the eyes of my boys, I’m amazed to see how BIG their love is for me.
This makes me realize the gravity of my role as mama in their little lives. I don’t know where I’d be today without my mama, and I’m sure you feel the same about yours.
We have baby fever going on in my family right now! Currently, I’m waiting on three nieces or nephews who will be born this summer. This weekend we are having a baby shower for my sister-in-law, Brooke. I thought this post would be fitting for such a fun occasion!
12 Encouraging Bible Verses About Mothers
Now it’s time to dive into the Scriptures and see what God has to say in these bible verses about mothers. Study these more in-depth in your quiet time this week. Then, check out these awesome bible verses about fathers!
1. She works hard to care for her family (Prov. 31:15-17)
She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks. (Proverbs 31:15-17)
You’ll never realize how hard mothers work until you become one yourself. The work truly never ends – the moment a room is picked up, more toys are on the floor. The moment the laundry is under control, another basket is full. Not to mention the endless meal prep and dishes.
While doing this work sometimes feels thankless and oh-so-ordinary, we are doing Kingdom work. Jesus said that the greatest in the Kingdom is servant of all. I can’t think of any greater service role than that of motherhood.

2. She is praised for loving God (Prov. 31:28-30)
Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. (Proverbs 31:28-30)
Next in our lineup of bible verses about mothers, we see an entire family verbally praising their mom. When a mother loves the Lord, her impact cannot be understated.
As mothers, our sphere of influence is massive in the lives of not only our children, but everyone they come in contact with throughout their lives.
Sometimes, we forget how much influence we have, especially as stay at home moms. Since we’re not in the public eye, we think our circle of influence is small, when in actuality, it is massive.
My sister recently shared a cool visual of the sphere of influence and control we possess as mothers, and I took the liberty of making it into a graphic for easy reference.
I think this concept is so huge for the understanding of our impact as mother. Our love for God touches everything within the sphere.
First, the greatest amount of control we possess is over our own actions. We have basically 100% influence over how we spend our time, how we react, how we care for ourselves, and how we prioritize prayer/Bible study.
Within this sphere, our choices make a huge difference and have a ripple effect to the other areas of the sphere. For example, if we don’t practice good self-care, it will affect how much we have left to give to our friends and family.
Next, we have “sway”, or major control, over our husband, children, and home. Although we cannot control 100% of their choices, our actions will have a major effect on them and influence their lives to a large degree.
Last, we also have some influence on our community, which includes extended family, friends, church family, service, and outreach. Our actions also affect all of the people within these spheres.
As mothers, our influence is even more crucial because we are directly shaping the lives of our children, who will have their own sphere of influence as they grow older.
When we put God first, our children will be extremely blessed and eventually rise up and call us blessed as well! Never underestimate your influence as a mother.
3. She teaches her children wisdom (Prov. 1:8-9)
Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck. (Proverbs 1:8-9)
In this list of bible verses about mothers, this one demonstrates what a wonderful responsibility we have. Mothers take on a huge portion of the job of teaching and training children. What we teach our kids about life will affect everything from this point forward.
The way they love the Lord, how they interact with others, how they take care of themselves and their families – all of these things are modeled first by you. Your wisdom is priceless!

4. She gives praise to the Lord (Luke 1:46-48)
And Mary said: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed… (Luke 1:46-48)
Of all the bible verses about mothers, this one should make us stop and take note. Mary the mother of Jesus is an incredible example of a mother’s positive attitude. The first thing she did after recognizing she would give birth to the Savior was to praise God!
Is praising God your first reaction when things happen in your life, be they good or bad? I know that for me personally, it is not. I have to intentionally be mindful of praising God, especially during hardship.
This is something I really need to work on. Mothers should be known as glorifying God in every situation – little eyes are watching you!
5. She recognizes that everything is a gift from God (Psalm 113:9)
He settles the childless woman in her home
as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord. (Psalm 113:9)
Sometimes, it’s easy to forget exactly where our little treasures come from – directly from the hand of God. It is His grace alone that grants us the privilege of motherhood.
I love this verse in Psalm 113 – it shows us that without God’s gifts, we have nothing. It is His joy to give us these perfect gifts!
6. She is full of love and compassion (Isaiah 49:15)
Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?(Isaiah 49:15)
Mothers have an incredible capacity for love and compassion, from the very moment we learn that a child is on the way. Immediately, we obsess over doing everything right for our kids and giving them the best start in life. When our baby cries, our natural instinct is to respond with compassion and cuddles.
Why else do you think that our first response to pain is “I want my mama!”? A mother’s love is unmatched, unfading, and unconditional.
7. She is an amazing comforter (Isaiah 66:13)
As a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem. (Isaiah 66:13)
This is one of those bible verses about mothers that really puts moms on a pedestal. So incredible is the comfort a mother provides for her children, that God uses it in Scripture to describe the type of comfort He gives.
Mothers naturally rock, cuddle, soothe, sing, and kiss our tears away. Somehow, in the midst of tremendous pain, a mother’s care lessens that pain.
As stated above, when we are hurting, there is no place we’d rather be than in the arms of our mother. In the same way, God wants to be your greatest source of comfort in this life and beyond.
8. She is blessed beyond measure (Psalm 127:3)
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. (Psalm 127:3)
The title of “mother”, “mom”, “mommy”, “mama”, or “mum” (as they say in Scotland) is a sacred one. Sometimes, in the mundane or stressful moments of everyday life, it’s easy to take this blessing for granted.
So many women are not blessed to have this title, and would give anything to possess it. The simple fact that somebody calls you “mother” is a blessing that cannot be measured.
9. She builds a legacy of faith (2 Tim. 1:5)
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. (2 Timothy 1:5)
As the apostle Paul writes to Timothy, he commends Timothy’s mother and grandmother for instilling a great faith in him. What an amazing way to be remembered! I pray that I can leave this same kind of legacy with my sons.
How are you working toward instilling a strong faith in your children? One great way to do this is by implementing nightly family devotionals. It’s a great way to keep the focus on God and encourage your kids to ask spiritual questions.
10. She sustains life (Psalm 139:13-14)
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139:13-14)
Next, we have one of the most beautiful and poetic bible verses about mothers. Can we just take a moment to marvel at the fact that God uses us to create new life? The way we are formed, inch by inch, is still a marvel that science and reason cannot understand.
No mother ever forgets the first sound of her baby’s heartbeat, or their first image on an ultrasound, or the feeling of that first kick. How precious it is to be a part of God’s divine creation, and to bring new life into this world.
11. She builds her house (Prov. 14:1)
The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down. (Prov 14:1)
Among all the bible verses about mothers, this one contains a warning. What does this passage mean? How do we, as mothers, “build our house?”
Of course this verse may refer to housekeeping, but this passage goes deeper than just cleanliness. I love the explanation from Enduring Word: “Wisdom builds. It looks at what is and wisely considers how to make it better. Many homes have been made by a godly, wise woman who looks after the home and builds it.”
Are you “building your house” through your speech, your actions, and your work? Take a look at these areas of your home and brainstorm ways you can build on them.
Whether the old saying “If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy” is true or not, it points to the immense influence we have upon everyone and everything in our home.
12. Her heart is full of treasure (Luke 2:51-52)
And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:51-52)
Last but not least, this verse about Mary has always been one of my favorite bible verses about mothers. I can just picture her, walking down that dusty road, pondering on the way Jesus spoke with authority to those Jewish teachers.
I’m sure she wanted to stand on the rooftops and shout, “Everyone look at my son! See how amazing, wise, and perfect he is? He’s the Son of God!”
In a smilar (albeit smaller) way, as mothers, our hearts are continually bursting with pride as we watch our children grow and develop. I love the way this verse says Mary “treasured up all these things in her heart.”
How beautiful. Every day, our hearts are filled with more and more treasure as we soak in the joys of our children.
This week, make a point of soaking in those “little moments” and treasuring them in your heart. Take note of what your child is learning, something cute they said, or something kind they did. Say a prayer of thanks to God for the privilege of being part of these small moments.
I hope these bible verses about mothers have helped you see your worth as a mom. Keep these in mind and meditate on them as you interact with your children. Never forget: mama, you are irreplaceable!
