There are hundreds of great memory verses for kids to start teaching your child today. And bible verses about love are the ones you should focus on first!
Why? Because having a knowledge of the love of God lays a foundation for a deep relationship with Him. After all, don’t you want to teach your child to love God more than anything else?
So in post, I’ve compiled what I consider to be the best Scriptures on love that are easy to memorize for children. (They’re awesome for adults, too!)
Most of these are fairly short bible verses, with a couple of exceptions. The longer ones can be broken down piece-by-piece and memorized that way. Each one will bless your child’s life in childhood, adulthood and beyond.
God’s Love for Children, Seen in Scripture
One of the best ways to help children understand God’s love is to help them embed bible verses about God’s love in their hearts. “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).
Having Bible verses stored up in our hearts from childhood is one of the greatest blessings we can receive. It serves us in times of trial, distress, discouragement, and temptation. Without these bits of wisdom to guide us, we can’t understand the fullness of His love for us.
Remind your kids how much God loves them personally. Talk about Matthew 19:14 where Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not forbid them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Memory Verses for Kids Quick-Learning Tips
There are so many ways to go about learning memory verses for kids:

- Write them down
- Create hand motions to go along with the verse
- Turn the memory verse into a song

You may already know most of these scriptures about love by heart, but helping your child learn them is a great refresher. Also, don’t just memorize them – talk about what they mean with your child. I’ve included some comments below each verse to help spark the conversation.

20 Memory Verses for Kids About God’s Love (+ Discussion Ideas)
1. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
True love shows through our actions. It is much more than a feeling. God shows love in the biggest way possible by sacrificing His precious Son. With your child, brainstorm some ways that we show love through our actions.
2. “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1a)
This is one of the most inspirational bible verses for kids, and one they can readily understand. The loving bond between parent and child is deep, fierce, and difficult to explain. It is one of the strongest loves we will experience in our lifetime.
Ask your child: Did you know that God loves you even BIGGER than Mommy and Daddy? Talk about the relationship of trust we can have with Him.
3. “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4:7)
Love originates with God – it is His inherent nature. If we are His children, we will show this same type of love. Discuss with your child some ways we can love other people.
4. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
This is one of the first verses we often memorize as children, and with good reason. Discuss with your child God’s love for each person in the world, no matter their age, color, nationality, or background.
5. “But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 86:15)
God’s love is often expressed in his patience toward us. Talk about the seriousness of sin and how it makes God angry. Then, discuss His patience and desire for us to become His children.
6. “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
Because God loves us, He wants us to have the best life possible. Make a list of all the ways God has given you an amazing life.
7. “Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” (Psalm 63:3)
Say a prayer of thanksgiving with your child, specifically thanking Him for loving us!
8. “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” (Hebrews 12:6)
Love is more than just warm fuzzies and hugs. Discuss with your child that REAL love also means disciplining when necessary. Explain that the reason this happens is because we want what is best for them, just as God does for us.
9. “…casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)
One of the great things about being loved is having someone to talk to in difficult times. Say a prayer with your child about the things that are bothering them. Express to your child that they can talk to God anytime about their problems. He wants to hear!

10. “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
This is one of the most comforting bible verses for children (or adults!) in the Bible. Talk with your child about how God is always with us, especially when we are afraid. Ask them about what scares them most and challenge them to pray during those times.
11. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
Ask your child about a time when they were hurt by someone and discuss how our relationship with God brings the ultimate healing.
12. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)
True love stands the test of time. It does not stop due to circumstances or feelings. Explain to your child that no matter what happens in their life or what they do, God will always love them. Nothing can change that.
13. “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.” (Psalm 103:13)
This is one of those bible verses about children that is guaranteed to touch your child’s heart. This is the type of love they understand. What a beautiful illustration of love through the parent-child relationship.
Ask your child, “What do I do that makes you feel the most loved?” Listen to them and strive to incorporate this action more frequently into your day.
14. “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.” (Proverbs 8:17)
God loves every person in the world, it’s true. But there is no doubt he has a special place in His heart for those who love Him back. With your child, brainstorm some ways we can love Him back.
15. “Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:26)
Of all the bible verses on God’s love, this one is often repeated in the bible – so we know it’s an important one! Say a prayer of thanksgiving to God and list your blessings together. Talk about what the concept of forever means.
16. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.” (John 15:9-17)
Being in a loving relationship with someone requires that we show consideration for that person. In the same way, God asks us to show our love for Him by obeying His commandments. Explain to your child the importance of obedience for a relationship with God. If we don’t obey His words, then we don’t really love Him (or respect Him) the way we should. The same applies to the parent-child relationship.
17. “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10)
God’s love for us came first, before our love for Him. And His love exists forever, whether we love Him or not. Explain again the importance of God showing His love through the sacrifice of Jesus.
18. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
This is one of those memory verse for kids that is easy to remember and makes a big impact. Talk about the importance of showing love to friends and putting them first. Explain how Jesus is the greatest friend of all because he was willing to die for us.
19. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
The greatest act of love is sacrifice. Ask your child, “Have you ever sacrificed (given) anything to show love to someone? Like sharing your favorite toy?” Discuss other ways we can show sacrifice to others.
20. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39)
This is obviously a more lengthy memory verse for children, but it’s perfect for older kids or it can be broken up into smaller pieces. This passage is a wonderful one to memorize as it illustrates the power of love. Nothing is stronger than love! Nothing life can throw at us can break the love of God. Have your child name a few of the most powerful things they can think of. Emphasize that none of these things even come close to the power of God’s love!
