Why make homemade pineapple cough syrup?

It seems to happen every fall or winter… the dreaded lingering cough. In reality, a cough is our friend (as long as it doesn’t persist too long). It helps move mucus out of the lungs.

I always hated the taste of cough syrup as a kid. The great thing about this recipe is not only is pineapple possibly helpful at suppressing cough, it also tastes so much better! Kids and adults love the taste of this homemade cough syrup. This is a great alternative to cough syrup from the store!

The star of this recipe is pineapple, which is rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps break up mucus. It is anti-inflammatory, is thought to help with respiratory issues, and even has anti-viral properites! (1)

Homemade Cough Syrup Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Pineapple – You can use fresh or frozen for this recipe. Avoid canned as it won’t be as effective, but you can use it in a pinch.
  • Honey – Did you know raw honey has been found to be as effective as cough syrup for suppressing coughs (2)? It helps to coat the throat and is anti-bacterial.
  • Lemon – A great vitamin C boost for the immune system.
  • Ginger – This is a natural anti-viral, anti-microbial, and antioxidant! Perfect when you’re sick.
  • Turmeric – Another powerful anti-inflammatory which also imparts mild pain reilef (3).

Pineapple Cough Syrup Method

This recipe couldn’t be easier. It’s very similar to making a smoothie: just add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.

Just peel and chop your pineapple if using fresh, or use frozen pineapple. If your fresh pineapple is pretty juicy, you may not need to add any liquid. With frozen, add a bit of pineapple juice or water to help the blending process.

Add pineapple to the blender along with honey, lemon juice, ginger, turmeric, and a bit of salt. That’s all you need!

For best results, strain the mixture after blending. It gets rid of any chunky or fibrous pieces and makes the texture smooth like a syrup.

Natural Cough Syrup Dosing Instructions

Since these are all natural ingredients, the dosing is pretty flexible here. But for adults, a couple of tablespoons is a good place to start. For kids, start with one tablespoon. You can take more throughout the day if needed since these are whole foods.

Another great idea is to add some of this to tea and drink it hot. Try adding it to elderberry, nettle, or turmeric tea.

Pineapple Cough Syrup Recipe Tips

  • For best results, use fresh or frozen pineapple instead of canned.
  • I like raw or manuka honey for the most benefits.
  • Blend on HIGH speed until super smooth. Pineapple is quite fibrous so you may need to blend a bit longer than you think is needed.
  • This cough syrup keeps fresh in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze it and thaw later if you aren’t going to use it all right away.
