What is faith, really, and what does the bible have to say about it? Is faith simply a feeling or belief, or does it go deeper and translate into action? These 65 bible verses on faith will help define its meaning, strengthen you during tough times, and help you develop a closer relationship with God.
When Faith is Tested
Our family’s faith has been tested in recent years.
As newlyweds, we had a rosy outlook on life and hadn’t experienced too many major hardships up to that point. Back then, it was easy to tell others, “Just have more faith” when they were going through hard times.
Later on, experiencing our own struggles with health problems, frequent cross-country moves, and more, our faith was put to the test. Moments of doubt began to creep in, and we needed to remind ourselves often of what (or more accurately, WHO) our faith is truly founded on.
Real faith is put to the test when the storms of life beat down on us. What’s even better is that God helps us during those times when we falter — as one disciple said to Jesus, “Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).
Lately I’ve experienced the beauty of God’s presence in a more tangible way, and I feel like He is helping take my faith to a deeper level. He is asking me to trust Him more fully, and as I do so, I am experiencing His peace in real ways.
Right now, faith looks more like letting go and trusting His goodness and less like trying to perform and figure things out myself.

What are the three components of faith?
There are three main components of faith that must be in place for it to be real and lasting.
- One must believe in God, in the reality of His being.
- One must believe that God is a good and loving God.
- One must show a willingness to seek God and obey Him, in order to demonstrate faith.
These components are based on Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Prayer for Deeper Faith in God
Try the following prayer to help deepen your faith in God:
Father, I don’t always understand Your ways or why certain things happen in my life. Things can be so confusing sometimes, and I confess that I often worry and try to fix things on my own. In my human frailty, I falter, but I believe in You and I believe that You are good. Lord, I believe — help my unbelief. Help me to keep my mind on You each day so that I can have a stronger faith and resolve. Help me to believe in good times and in bad. Be with me as I study Your word, that I may learn more of your character and that it may strengthen my faith.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
What about faith vs. works?
In some circles, Christian folks debate about which is more important: faith or works. But, these two things need not be at odds — in fact, they go hand in hand.
Good works are how we demonstrate that we have faith in God. Our righteous works are not what saves us or justifies us in God’s sight; rather, they are the fruit of a genuine faith. When you have a deep faith in God, you will put it into action.
You cannot have faith without works; however, you can have works without faith. 1 Corinthians 13:3 states, “If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.”
If you do all the “right” things for God without a heart of faith in Him, it is all for naught. Faith is the purpose of our life, works are the result.
